A heavy police response was sent to Jacobs High School in Algonquin for an alarm that prompted a hard lockdown Friday morning, officials said.
The Algonquin Police Department said around 7:40 a.m. that a heavy police presence was in the area of Harry D. Jacobs High School, 2601 Bunker Hill Drive in Algonquin, for an “ongoing incident.”
“As of this time no threat has been detected,” police said while asking the public to avoid the area until further notice.
In an update around 8:20 a.m., police said all activities at the school have resumed “as safe and normal.”
School officials said a lockdown alarm was activated at approximately 7:21 a.m.
“We immediately implemented our lockdown procedures and worked closely with local law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of everyone on campus,” the school said in a message to parents.
All students and staff inside the building were safely secured in classrooms or designated locations during the lockdown.
The alarm was ultimately determined to be a false alarm.
The lockdown was lifted and students were allowed back into the building.
“Anytime police must review a building during a lockdown, anyone not yet inside must wait to enter the school to ensure the situation is safe and secure,” the school said.
“We understand this situation may have caused concern, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we prioritized safety,” officials added.
Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Timothy Cooney said officers from the Algonquin Police Department and other nearby law enforcement agencies responded.
Officers conducted a thorough search of the building and determined the activation was a false alarm, Cooney said.
