Authorities say multiple chickens died after a large chicken coop was engulfed in flames on a residential property near Lake Villa Tuesday morning.

The Lake Villa Fire Protection District responded around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday to the 25100 block of West Dering Lane in unincorporated Lake Villa for a report of a structure fire.

Lake Villa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Justin Biggs said crews were responding and advised a shed was on fire.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames showing from a large chicken coop.

The engulfed structure, approximately 20 feet by 30 feet in size, was not at risk of spreading to the house, Biggs said.

An unknown number of chickens died in the fire, which occurred in an area without fire hydrants.

Biggs said the Fox Lake, Antioch and Gurnee fire departments assisted and the fire was quickly extinguished without any challenges.

The resident was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported to the resident or responding firefighters.

Biggs said the fire is not believed to be suspicious but the cause is undetermined.
