One person suffered smoke inhalation after firefighters assisted a person out of a burning home which left the residents displaced in Zion Saturday evening.

The Zion Fire Rescue Department responded around 6:50 p.m. Saturday to the 1900 block of Sunshine Court in Zion for a report of a structure fire.

Zion Fire Rescue Department Lt. Ian Kennedy said crews arrived to find a moderate amount of smoke coming from the closed garage doors of a house.

Light smoke was visible inside the residence and one occupant was still inside trying to put the fire out.

Kennedy said firefighters located the occupant and removed them.

A hose line was then brought into the attached garage through the home and the fire was located and extinguished.

Fire crews ventilated the garage and the residence. Overhaul operations were performed to make sure the fire had not extended, Kennedy said.

ComEd disconnected power to the residence and the home was deemed temporarily uninhabitable until all utilities can be inspected and deemed safe, according to Zion Fire Rescue Chief Justin Stried.

“The firefighters did a great job of containing the fire inside of the attached garage,” Stried said. The residents found shelter with friends and family.

One occupant of the home was evaluated for smoke inhalation but did not require transport to the hospital.

Kennedy said Zion Public Works salted the roadway after the incident to prevent accidents on the ice caused by water runoff.

The fire was confined to the garage and the cause remains under investigation. Damage was estimated at $75,000.

“Working smoke detectors save lives and property. They provide early detection to both escape and notify emergency responders sooner to respond and put the fire out, preventing further damage,” Kennedy said.

“Also, if your home is on fire, it is extremely important to exit the residence and not attempt to extinguish yourself. Please remove yourself from danger and let the firefighters handle it,” he added.

The Beach Park, Gurnee, Winthrop Harbor, Pleasant Prairie and Waukegan fire departments assisted at the scene while the Libertyville, North Chicago and Antioch fire departments covered calls in Zion.
