A woman was seriously injured after a sedan crashed into a van and caused all lanes on Interstate 94 near Gurnee to be shut down Monday evening, state police said.
The Illinois State Police responded around 10:40 p.m. Monday to westbound Interstate 94 near mile marker 8 in Gurnee for a report of a vehicle crash.
Troopers with ISP Troop 3 arrived to find a two-vehicle crash with injuries.
The Gurnee Fire Department was then called to the scene, which was located north of Grand Avenue.
A preliminary investigation showed a Ford Transit van slowed in the lane, according to an ISP spokesperson.
A Nissan Altima, which was traveling behind the Ford, rear-ended the Ford. Heavy damage was reported.
The ISP spokesperson said a 37-year-old Chicago woman, who was a passenger in the Nissan, was injured.
Paramedics transported her to a local hospital for treatment.
Her injuries were initially listed as serious at the time of transport, the ISP spokesperson said.
Both drivers of the vehicles did not report any injuries.
The driver of the Nissan, Jose Torres, 29, of Cresthill, was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
The driver of the Ford, Thomas Iversen, 41, of Libertyville, was cited for illegally stopping or standing and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
The ISP spokesperson said all four lanes of westbound Interstate 94 were shut down for over an hour and reopened just before midnight.
