Firefighters extinguished a brush fire that was one to two acres in size and was rapidly spreading due to high winds in Bull Valley Wednesday morning.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to the 200 block of Cold Springs Road in Bull Valley for a report of a brush fire.

Firefighters encountered a long, more than 2000-foot, driveway leading to the property, which posed initial challenges for access and water supply, according to Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.

Crews found a brush fire spanning approximately one to two acres that was spreading rapidly due to strong winds, Vucha said.

Additional resources were requested from the Wonder Lake and McHenry fire protection districts to assist with manpower and water supply.

Firefighters worked to quickly contain the fire and were able to prevent damage to structures on the property.

The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.

While brush fires in winter months are more uncommon, they can still occur despite colder temperatures and snow, Vucha said.

“Dry vegetation, combined with wind and occasional periods of low humidity, can create conditions that allow fires to ignite and spread rapidly,” he added.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District thanked the responding agencies for their assistance in bringing the fire under control.
