A police canine is being credited with tracking down a suspect who stole from a store in Lake County and then fled from responding officers.
The Round Lake Park Police Department said Tuesday that Canine Gunny is “happy to work” despite the cold weather.
Gunny was requested by the Round Lake Beach Police Department to help search for a retail theft suspect that fled on foot from officers.
Gunny obtained the scent of the suspect and tracked him to a brush area behind railroad tracks, police officials said.
Multiple commands were given for the suspect to surrender but he refused to acknowledge or comply.
Police officials said Gunny entered the brush area and located the subject who was lying down and hiding from officers.
The suspect was taken into custody without further incident near Route 83 and Hook Drive in Round Lake Beach.
He was positively identified by store staff as being the offender who stole from their establishment.
