Nearly a dozen fire departments responded after a fire broke out at a house that was under renovation in Barrington Hills Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District responded around 12:48 p.m. Saturday to the 300 block of Old Sutton Road in Barrington Hills for a report of a structure fire.

Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District Chief Scott Motisi said firefighters arrived in under four minutes.

They found a two-story house that was currently under renovation.

Smoke and flames were coming from the corner of the attached garage and the fire had extended to the second-story roof, Motisi said.

A National Incident Management System (NIMS) command system was established and the incident was upgraded to a working fire response.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, search for any occupants and ventilate the smoke.

Motisi said the fire was contained and extinguished within 10 minutes.

Crews also salvaged and overhauled the structure to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

No injuries were reported by residents or fire crews. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation, Motisi said.

The homeowner, Robin Duggan, told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the fire originated in a garbage can and affected a two-by-three-foot corner of the garage.

Duggan said the recent renovation was unrelated to the fire. “The fire was primarily extinguished by my husband using a fire extinguisher before the arrival of responders,” she said.

The Barrington, Cary, East Dundee, Fox River Grove, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Lake Zurich, Long Grove and Wauconda fire departments assisted.
