U.S. Marshals have captured a Guatemalan national wanted for crashing into a car, killing two friends — one from Deerfield, in central Illinois and trying to flee to Mexico.
The Urbana Police Department said they were called around 1:55 a.m. on January 19 to the intersection of University Avenue and Coler Avenue for a serious vehicle crash.
A Honda Civic was traveling eastbound on University Avenue and had stopped at Coler Avenue for a red traffic light.
A Mitsubishi SUV was traveling in the same direction behind the Honda at a high rate of speed, police said.
The Mitsubishi struck the Honda, causing severe damage to both vehicles and injuries.
The Urbana Fire Department extricated the passengers in the Honda and provided life-saving measures.
A total of five occupants were in the Honda and all were transported to the hospital for their injuries.
Police said two of the passengers, Chloe Polzin, 21, of Deerfield, and Katherine Abraham, 20, of Glenview, both died in the hospital.
Abraham’s father said his daughter and Polzin were friends. The two were at the University of Illinois visiting friends while on break from school.
The SUV driver fled southbound on Coler Avenue on foot and was not located by officers.
Detectives and an accident reconstruction investigator examined the scene and conducted the investigation.
Businesses and residents in the area were asked to provide police with surveillance video of the suspect and his vehicle.
Police initially identified the suspect as Juan Jahaziel Saenz-Suarez, a 27-year-old Mexican national residing in Urbana.
They later learned that Juan JaHaziel Saenz-Suarez was an alias name used by the suspect.
He had possessed falsified Mexican paperwork and has now been correctly identified as Julio Cucul Bol, a 29-year-old Guatemalan citizen, police said.
Cucul Bol was charged with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence causing death, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and two counts of reckless homicide.
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force (GLRFTF) in conjunction with the USMS Northern District of Texas (N/TX) North Texas Fugitive Task Force (NTFTF) arrested Cucul Bol on Wednesday in Milford, Texas.
Officers learned he was traveling south toward the Southern Border of the United States.
Police said the man was riding an El Expreso bus destined for Matamoros, Mexico.
The USMS said Cucul Bol has previously been deported once from the United States.
“This type of partnership is essential to local law enforcement, and I would like to thank the women and men of the Urbana Police Department and the US Marshals Service for their efforts in capturing Saenz-Suarez,” Urbana Police Chief Larry D. Boone said.
“On behalf of the City of Urbana, I wish to offer my sincere condolences to the families and friends affected by this horrible event,” Urbana Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin said.
