A resident was displaced after a fire fully engulfed an apartment at an apartment building in North Chicago, leaving the unit completely destroyed Saturday evening.

The North Chicago Fire Department responded around 8:08 p.m. Saturday to the 1500 block of Broadway Avenue in North Chicago for a report of a structure fire.

North Chicago Fire Chief John Umek said a 911 caller reported a fully involved structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke showing from a 16-unit apartment building.

Firefighters entered and found one of the units on the third floor was fully engulfed in flames, Umek said.

They conducted an interior attack on the fire and quickly extinguished it within approximately 10 minutes.

Several fire departments, including Waukegan, Great Lakes, Beach Park, Libertyville, Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, responded to assist.

Umek said all of the residents were able to evacuate safely, including the male resident whose apartment caught fire.

The entire apartment unit was left destroyed with heavy fire and smoke damage. All other units were unaffected by the fire.

No injuries were reported to any residents or firefighters, Umek said.

Fire crews remained on the scene for a couple of hours performing extensive overhaul to ensure the fire had not spread and was fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it is not believed to be suspicious in nature.
