Officials say a suspect is in custody after a stolen vehicle drove the wrong way on a ramp to Route 41, causing a three-vehicle crash in Gurnee Thursday morning.
The Gurnee Police Department responded around 5:22 a.m. Thursday to the area of Washington Street and Frontage Road.
Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said officers respond to an automated crash notification from a vehicle’s crash detection service.
Additional 911 calls were received and confirmed the crash involved three cars.
A preliminary investigation showed that a white Land Rover, driven by a 22-year-old Oak Creek, Wisconsin woman, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Frontage Road, which also serves as an on-ramp for Route 41 from Washington Street.
Gaylor said two vehicles turned northbound onto the Route 41 on-ramp as the Land Rover continued in the wrong direction.
The Land Rover collided head-on with the first vehicle, a black Cadillac.
The collision caused a secondary crash with a gray Toyota, which rear-ended the Cadillac.
Officers observed the driver of the Land Rover attempting to flee on foot as they arrived on the scene, Gaylor said.
She then started to walk back toward the crash scene but she refused to comply with the officers’ commands.
Gaylor said officers attempted to detain her but she resisted and they had to use force to take her into custody.
The suspect was not injured during the incident but a police officer suffered a minor injury. The officer did not require transport to the hospital.
The driver of the Land Rover was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan for evaluation.
Officers later learned the Land Rover had been stolen from Wisconsin the previous evening, Gaylor said.
The driver of the Cadillac, a 58-year-old man, and his passengers, a 49-year-old male and a 30-year-old male, who are all from Waukegan, were not injured in the crash.
The driver of the Toyota, a 29-year-old Waukegan man, was also uninjured.
Gaylor said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
