A man and a woman were transported to the hospital after they were struck by an SUV whose driver claimed that his brakes failed near Lincolnshire, the sheriff said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Long Grove Fire Protection District and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded around 2:37 p.m. Sunday to the 16200 block of West Aptakisic Road in unincorporated Lincolnshire for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said two pedestrians were struck by a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe.
The driver, a 62-year-old man, reported the brakes on his Chevrolet failed and two people were struck and injured in the backyard of the property.
Deputies learned a 61-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were attempting to load a brush pile into the back of the Chevrolet, Covelli said.
They were standing in front of the brush pile and the driver began to reverse the Chevrolet.
Covelli said the driver said either his foot slipped off the brake pedal or the vehicle’s brakes failed.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the pedestrians, who were conscious and breathing at the scene.
Paramedics transported the victims to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.
Covelli said alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the incident.
