A Wonder Lake resident has been sentenced to probation for kicking a McHenry County sheriff’s deputy in the groin area, resisting arrest and punching another sheriff’s deputy.
Anthony M. Royce, 25, of Wonder Lake, was charged in October with four counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, two counts of battery and one count of resisting arrest.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Royce shoved a man’s head into the ground and repeatedly kicked him around 10:20 p.m. on October 19 in McHenry County.
The complaint said Royce kicked a responding McHenry County sheriff’s deputy in the groin area and bit the deputy’s right pinky finger.
Royce also spit on another deputy’s boots and punched the deputy’s left leg while being detained, the complaint said.
The complaint said Royce resisted arrest by placing his legs at an angle and tensing up, preventing himself from being escorted to the police car by deputies.
Once at the squad car, Royce placed a foot on the grill of the vehicle and used his momentum to push back against sheriff’s deputies to prevent him from being placed in the squad, the complaint said.
Royce was released from the McHenry County Jail following his arrest and while on pre-trial release, he cut the rubber band of his electronic monitoring device while at his home in the 7400 block of Birch Drive in Wonder Lake, according to a criminal complaint.
He was subsequently charged with criminal damage to government property.
Court records show Royce recently into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Royce on Wednesday pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery of a peace officer, a Class 2 felony, in exchange for a sentence of probation and the dismissal of the rest of his charges.
McHenry County Judge Mark Gerhardt approved the plea and sentenced Royce to two years of probation and ordered him to undergo anger management counseling.
