Authorities are warning residents in McHenry County about phone scammers impersonating the sheriff’s office in an attempt to steal money from callers.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office first said in November that they had been receiving reports of a phone scam targeting local residents using an 815 area code number.
The sheriff’s office said the scammers were using the names of real employees at the sheriff’s office and asking people to call back urgently.
The scammers would claim there was a warrant out for the caller’s arrest or that they missed a jury summons, sheriff’s officials said.
The scammers then continued to press for personal information and ask for payment.
On Monday, the sheriff’s office announced they were receiving reports of scammers once again targeting local residents.
“Scammers have refined their approach, specifically targeting individuals who have recently been arrested or had interactions with police,” the agency said.
Sheriff’s officials said police will never contact people by phone or text claiming they have a warrant or asking for a bond payment. Illinois also no longer has cash bond.
Anyone who receives a scam call is recommended to hang up the phone. Those who wish to confirm the legitimacy of a phone call can do so by contacting the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at (815) 338-2144.
Residents are also urged to talk to their elderly friends and family about the scams since they are the most affected demographic.
