The National Weather Service is warning about an icy wintry mix expected in the Chicagoland area on Wednesday that could impact travel conditions.

A cold front will quickly drop south Monday afternoon and bring an end to the mild conditions, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The weather service said there is concern for the potential of an icy wintry mix on Wednesday, specifically in the afternoon to evening.

Precipitation will overspread the northern Illinois area during the afternoon and continue into the evening before ending overnight.

Residents should expect a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain and then changing to rain in spots late in the day into evening, especially further south.

“While it’s still too early to confidently narrow down the specifics with this system, including the magnitude of impacts, at least some winter weather impacts are likely for many locations,” the NWS said Monday.

The highest chance for ice accumulations of 0.1 inches or greater is in areas near and north of Interstate 80.
