A winter weather advisory has been issued for the Chicagoland area ahead of freezing rain expected on Wednesday that could cause hazardous road conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter weather advisory Tuesday afternoon.

The advisory will go into effect from 3 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.

The Lake, McHenry, Boone, Winnebago, Cook, DuPage, DeKalb, Kane, Ogle and Lee counties are included in the advisory.

The NWS said a wintry mix will start as snow and sleet before changing to freezing rain mixed with sleet.

The weather will overspread the area from late Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening.

Untreated surfaces will become ice-covered and slippery, the NWS said.

Total snow and sleet accumulations of up to an inch and ice accumulations of a glaze up to one-tenth of an inch are expected.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous.

Motorists should plan on slippery road conditions, including during the Wednesday evening commute, the NWS said.

The primary icing window is from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 12 a.m. Thursday but there remains uncertainty as to where the highest ice accumulations will be.

The weather service said motorists should slow down and use caution while traveling.
