A dog died and several residents were displaced after a fire broke out, sending heavy flames from a duplex home, in North Chicago Wednesday morning.

The North Chicago Fire Department and North Chicago Police Department responded around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday to the area of 14th Street and Victoria Avenue for a report of a structure fire.

A passerby reported seeing a fire and police officers arrived to find an active structure fire in the 1400 block of Victoria Avenue.

North Chicago Fire Chief John Umek said firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and smoke coming from the side of a duplex home.

Fire crews performed an interior attack on the fire, which started on the first floor and extended to the second floor.

Firefighters performed extensive overhaul operations to bring the fire, which was in the walls, under control, Umek said.

A dog died in the fire but no other injuries were reported.

Umek said the residents of both units were not home at the time and were at work.

Significant damage was reported and both apartments sustained smoke and fire damage, leaving them uninhabitable.

Several fire departments responded to assist the North Chicago Fire Department, Umek said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
