An SUV rolled over after it drove the wrong way and crashed into a school bus, which had nearly two dozen students aboard, in Gurnee Thursday afternoon.
The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 2:10 p.m. Thursday to Vineyard Drive and Mendocino Drive in Gurnee for a report of a crash involving a school bus and SUV.
An initial investigation showed that the school bus was traveling northbound on Vineyard Drive with 22 students inside, according to Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor.
A Lexus SUV, driven by a 34-year-old Forest Park woman, was also traveling northbound.
The driver of the Lexus incorrectly believed that Vineyard Drive was a two-lane road and was traveling northbound in the southbound lane.
The Lexus collided with the front corner of the school bus as it attempted to make a left turn onto Mendocino Drive.
The crash caused the Lexus to roll over onto its roof up against a sign on the grass.
The driver of the Lexus was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was evaluated by paramedics but did not require further medical attention.
The 22 students aboard the school bus were unharmed and the bus driver was also uninjured.
Gaylor said it was fortunate that no one was injured in the crash.
The bus sustained damage and was towed from the scene along with the Lexus.
The driver of the Lexus was cited for improper lane usage, which was determined to be the cause of the crash, Gaylor said.
