A Zion man was taken into custody after officials say he led deputies on a high-speed chase at 120+ mph from Kenosha County into Lake County Wednesday morning.
The Kenosha County, Wisconsin Sheriff’s Department engaged in a vehicle pursuit around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Colin Coultrip said a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop near County Highway S and County Highway H outside of Kenosha.
The deputy was stopping the vehicle for speeding and suspended registration but the driver refused to stop.
A pursuit was initiated and the vehicle fled south where it eventually crossed from Wisconsin into Illinois, Coultrip said.
Deputies stopped the pursuit, which reached speeds of 120+ mph, but continued south to check to see if the suspect crashed, Coultrip said.
Kenosha County deputies observed the suspect attempting to ditch the vehicle at the Citgo gas station on the corner of Route 41 and Route 173 in Wadsworth.
Coultrip said Kenosha County deputies detained the suspect before local Illinois law enforcement arrived.
No injuries or crashes were reported during the incident.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the suspect, Johnathan J. Coxey, 21, of Zion, was transported to the Lake County Jail.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office charged Coxey with one count of fugitive from justice for fleeing from Wisconsin authorities.
The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office charged Coxey with second-degree recklessly endangering safety and vehicle operating fleeing to elude an officer.
Coxey remains held in the Lake County Jail pending extradition to Kenosha County, Wisconsin.
