A marina employee rescued a victim who fell through the ice into the water on Lake Michigan in Winthrop Harbor Tuesday morning, fire officials said.
The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded around 9:50 a.m. Tuesday to North Point Marina, 701 North Point Drive, for a report of a surface ice rescue.
Firefighters quickly donned their ice rescue gear and raced to the scene, according to the fire department.
Fire crews arrived and found the victim had already been rescued from the water by North Point Marina staff.
Fire officials said the successful rescue occurred after North Point Marina’s general manager looked out his window and saw the individual bobbing in the water.
The manager instructed his staff to call 911, retrieved a rope and helped pull the victim to safety before emergency responders arrived.
The victim was transported by the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department to Vista Medical Center East for treatment of hypothermia.
“Both the North Point Marina and Winthrop Harbor Fire Department would like to remind the public that the ice on Lake Michigan is currently unsafe. For your safety, please stay off the ice,” officials said in a statement.
