A person was left critically injured and had to be flown to the hospital after a crash involving an SUV and a semi-truck on Interstate 90 near Marengo Saturday morning.
The Hampshire Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police responded around 6:59 a.m. Saturday to westbound Interstate 90 near the 39.5 mile marker near Marengo for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Fire officials said the crash involved a GMC Yukon and a semi-truck west of Harmony Road. Heavy damage was reported.
Firefighters had to extricate a victim trapped in the SUV who suffered critical injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was out of the truck.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was called and landed nearby at Elgiloy Specialty Metals in Hampshire.
The helicopter flew the critically injured victim to a Level 1 trauma center in Rockford.
A second person was treated by paramedics at the scene and a third person declined treatment.
The Pingree Grove Fire Protection District and Burlington Fire Protection District assisted at the scene and the Huntley Fire Protection District covered Hampshire’s fire station. The Hampshire Police Department assisted in securing the landing zone.
A spokesperson for the Illinois State Police said around 9:50 a.m. that the two left lanes of westbound Interstate 90 remained shut down due to the investigation.
The spokesperson said additional information relating to the cause of the crash was not available as the investigation remains active.
