A cold weather advisory has been issued for northern Illinois ahead of bitterly cold wind chill temperatures of 30 degrees below zero moving into the area.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a cold weather advisory on Sunday morning for the Chicagoland area.

The advisory goes into effect at midnight Sunday and covers Lake, McHenry, Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall and Cook counties.

The NWS said very cold wind chills as low as 25-30 below zero are expected.

The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, the advisory said.

Residents are urged to use caution while traveling outside and wear appropriate clothing, including a hat and gloves.

The NWS said the bitterly cold temperatures will occur over an “extended period” over the next few days.

A forecast chart from the NWS shows that Waukegan could see -17 degree minimum wind chills and Rockford could see -20 degree minimum wind chills Sunday night into Monday morning.

Waukegan could see -20-degree minimum wind chills and Rockford could see -25-degree minimum wind chills Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The temperatures are expected to improve on Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning with Waukegan seeing -9-degree minimum wind chills and Rockford seeing -15-degree minimum wind chills.

“… make sure to bundle up and limit your time outdoors!” the NWS said, adding that residents should bring their pets indoors.
