The Round Lake Fire Protection District has announced the addition of its newest member, a year-old chocolate lab that is a certified therapy dog.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District said Burny, a one-year-old chocolate lab, will provide comfort and support to firefighters and community members during times of stress and crisis.

“Burny will be a wonderful ambassador for the department, helping us positively connect with the community. He’ll be especially helpful in easing anxieties during community events and when children or others may be experiencing stress related to critical situations,” Fire Chief Greg Formica said.

Burny and his handler have undergone extensive training by TOPS in Dog Training of Grayslake.

The canine is certified as an assistance dog for public access based on criteria issued by Assistance Dogs International.

Burny will be available to first responders after critical incidents, at community outreach events and at the fire station to provide a calming presence.

“We recognize the importance of mental health and well-being for our firefighters and the community we serve,” Formica said.

“Burny’s presence will be invaluable in providing comfort and support during challenging times,” the fire chief added.

Pet Supplies Plus has sponsored Burny’s food and other supplies for his lifetime.

The fire district said community members are invited to meet Burny at the agency’s annual open house in September.
