Crews completely shut down a busy stretch of Route 59 near Barrington Tuesday afternoon due to icy conditions on the roadway, authorities said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said around 4 p.m. Tuesday that Route 59 was shut down in unincorporated Barrington.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) closed Route 59 from Route 22 to Cuba Road.
The sheriff’s office said it is unknown how long the road closure will be in effect.
IDOT was seen blocking the roadway with plow trucks and detour signage was put into place.
The closure is due to water on the roadway freezing over, causing icy conditions.
IDOT is diverting traffic but maintaining access to homes in the area.
Motorists are being advised to take an alternative route.
