Residents were displaced after two apartments were deemed uninhabitable following a fire that broke out at an apartment complex in Antioch, fire officials said.

The Antioch Fire Protection District and Antioch Police Department responded around 1:53 a.m. Thursday to the 200 block of Joanna Court for a report of a structure fire.

Police officers arrived first and found smoke inside the apartment building.

Firefighters arrived and encountered moderate smoke conditions in the building, Antioch Fire Department Lt. Francisco Contreras-Gomez said.

A Working Still Alarm was activated due to the smoke conditions and reports from firefighters inside.

The upgrade brought mutual aid from Fox Lake, Grayslake, Lake Villa, Newport, Round Lake and Salem Lakes fire departments.

Contreras-Gomez said firefighters located the fire in a wall in a second-floor unit.

Firefighters worked for approximately two hours to extinguish the fire and conduct overhaul operations — extinguishing hidden fire.

Two apartment units were deemed uninhabitable and the American Red Cross was notified.

No residents or firefighters were injured and no pets were harmed either, Contreras-Gomez said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Antioch Fire Protection District.
