One person was injured after a fire engulfed a garage and quickly spread throughout a house in Vernon Hills, causing significant damage early Thursday morning.

The Countryside Fire Protection District and Vernon Hills Police Department responded around 1:15 a.m. Thursday to the 1000 block of Pine Grove Court in Vernon Hills for a report of a structure fire.

Countryside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Kevin Wodrich said fire crews arrived and found heavy flames showing from a garage attached to a house.

The fire had extended into the living space and attic of the two-story single-family residence.

All occupants had exited the residence prior to the fire department arriving, Wodrich said.

The home sustained heavy damage from the fire and was deemed uninhabitable.

Wodrich said a resident was evaluated by paramedics for smoke inhalation but did not require transport to the hospital.

No other injuries were reported by other occupants or firefighters.

The Countryside Fire Protection District was assisted by the Mundelein, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Lake Zurich and Buffalo Grove fire departments at the scene.

The Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Highland Park, Round Lake and Inverness Fire Departments covered Countryside’s fire stations.

Around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the fire district was called back to the scene after the home caught on fire again.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Wodrich said. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

Fire officials said residents should “remember to close before you doze,” referring to making sure their bedroom doors are closed while sleeping to protect people in case of a fire.
