A resident is being credited after they spotted their neighbor’s house on fire, which led to the residents evacuating safely, in Gurnee Sunday evening.

The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 9:29 p.m. Sunday to the 4200 block of Old Grand Avenue in Gurnee for a report of a structure fire.

Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Steffens said a resident called 911 to report their neighbor’s roof was on fire.

Firefighters arrived to find flames showing from the two-story single-family residence.

The residents of the home were able to evacuate and were uninjured, Steffens said.

The fire was located on the cedar shake roof and firefighters extinguished the fire from the outside.

They went inside the home and extinguished the remainder of the fire, which damaged the roof and the attic, Steffens said.

The home was not seriously damaged and remains habitable. The inside sustained limited damage.

No firefighter injuries were reported and the Gurnee Fire Department was able to handle the incident without mutual aid fire departments.

Steffens said crews remained on the scene until around 10:45 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
