Two dozen fire departments were called after a three-alarm fire fully engulfed a large garage attached to a home in Kildeer Wednesday evening, fire officials said.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 9:29 p.m. Wednesday to the 21300 block of West Brandon Road in Kildeer for a report of a structure fire.
Lake Zurich Fire Chief David Pilgard said multiple 911 calls were received by dispatch, which toned out the incident in less than a minute.
Pilgard said that due to the multiple calls of the fire and confirmation of smoke in the area, the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level.
The alarm upgrade brought additional fire department resources, including water tenders, to the scene.
“… because of the rural nature of the area. This home is almost a half-mile on a dead end street and there is no fire hydrants in this area,” Pilgard said.
Firefighters arrived within five minutes to find a heavily-involved garage fire, Pilgard said. All three residents were accounted for.
Fire crews deployed almost a half-mile of large diameter hose to set up a water supply.
The MABAS alarm was eventually upgraded to the full second alarm and third alarm level for water tenders only, Pilgard said.
Pilgard said firefighters were able to start extinguishing the garage fire and also deploy a hose line to the inside of the home, resulting in the house being saved despite the garage being heavily involved in flames.
The home sustained some heat and smoke damage but did not catch on fire.
The three-car garage was a total loss and three vehicles were also destroyed.
No injuries were reported to any firefighters or residents.
Approximately two dozen fire departments responded to assist Lake Zurich, Pilgard said, adding that 42,000 gallons of water were used.
The fire originated in the garage and several fire investigators were at the scene late Wednesday evening to determine what caused the fire.
