Authorities say two suspects from Round Lake Beach and Grayslake fought with sheriff’s deputies and resisted arrest during a traffic stop in Grayslake before one of them was tased.
A Lake County sheriff’s deputy was on patrol around 2 a.m. Saturday in the area of Washington Street and Lancer Lane in Grayslake.
He observed a vehicle driving without its headlights on, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said.
The deputy turned around to initiate a traffic stop but the driver — later identified as Swayne Carranza, 38, of Round Lake Beach — accelerated to 80 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Covelli said the deputy was able to catch up to the vehicle as it pulled into a driveway in the 1100 block of Cambridge Drive in Grayslake where a traffic stop was conducted.
Carranza immediately exited the vehicle in an aggressive manner and refused to comply with the deputy’s instructions, Covelli said.
He was informed he was being placed under arrest and he resisted and pulled away, trying to defeat their efforts, when deputies attempted to place him in custody, Covelli said.
The Grayslake Police Department responded to assist the sheriff’s office.
A deputy deployed a taser, which successfully subdued Carranza and took him into custody.
While deputies were working to arrest Carranza, a passenger in the vehicle, identified as Maria Lara, 32, of Grayslake, exited the vehicle and began interfering with the arrest.
Covelli said the woman kicked one of the deputies and resisted their efforts to take her into custody. Deputies were able to subdue Lara and place her under arrest.
Lara was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer and open transportation of alcohol.
Carranza was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, aggravated speeding and multiple traffic violations.
Lara and Carranza were both processed at the jail and released on pre-trial conditions following a First Appearance Court hearing.
