A hazardous materials response was sent after more than 30 gallons of diesel fuel spilled at a gas station in Kildeer and some was believed to have gone into the sewer.
The Long Grove Fire Protection District and Kildeer Police Department responded around 1:20 p.m. Friday to Thorntons, 20249 North Plum Grove Road in Kildeer, for a report of a fuel spill.
A hazardous materials response was dispatched with several other fire departments.
Long Grove Fire Protection District Battalion Chief John Jaworski said that approximately 35 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled based on camera footage and computer data.
The fuel overflowed and spilled onto the ground, with some of it likely going into sewer drains.
Fire crews put down oil dry to absorb the spilled fuel and used hazmat pigs around storm drains to keep any additional fuel from entering, Jaworski said.
Jaworski said the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency was notified about the incident.
The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Lake Zurich, Buffalo Grove and Palatine fire departments assisted at the scene.
The Fox Lake Fire Protection District covered Long Grove’s fire station.
