A homeowner and firefighters quickly extinguished a fire that damaged the garage of a townhome in McHenry Sunday evening, fire officials said.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry Police Department responded around 9:50 p.m. Sunday to the 1000 block of Carrick Lane in McHenry for a report of a structure fire.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood said fire crews arrived on the scene in four minutes.

They found smoke coming from an attached garage of a two-story townhome.

The homeowner was found putting water on the small fire with a garden hose, Harwood said.

Firefighters fully extinguished the fire and removed the smoke from the garage.

Harwood said the fire was contained to the garage and did not spread to the inside of the home.

The home remains habitable and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
