A teenage girl who went missing from Wisconsin and authorities said was possibly in the Waukegan or Chicago area has been found dead in Lake Michigan in Kenosha.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) said on Monday that they were asking for the public’s help in the search for Kayla Sobczak.

Monday marked the woman’s 19th birthday. She has been missing from Kenosha, Wisconsin, since December 17.

Sobczak was possibly in Kenosha, Racine or Milwaukee, Wisconsin, or in Illinois in Waukegan or Chicago, the NCMEC said.

The Kenosha Police Department said she was last seen wearing a black windbreaker or sweatshirt and dark pants.

Sobczak was reported to have been picked up by an unidentified male possibly in a charcoal gray sedan, police said.

Her destination on the night she was last seen was unknown.

Police said Sobczak has a history of mental health issues, drug addiction and prostitution.

The Kenosha Police Department responded around 5 p.m. Sunday to a 911 call for a found body located within the Lake Michigan break wall at Eichelman Park.

Officers arrived and confirmed the reporting caller’s observations.

The subject was retrieved and transferred to the Kenosha County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The identity of the woman was not immediately known and authorities began working to identify her.

The police department announced Wednesday afternoon that the victim had been identified as Sobczak following the assistance of the medical examiner’s office and a forensic odontologist.

Police said Sobczak’s death is “still being investigated” and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective James Krein at 262-605-5280.
