A 44-year-old woman has been charged with drug-induced homicide for allegedly delivering drugs that led to the overdose death of a Crystal Lake man.
Heather L. Schultz, 44, of Union, was charged with one count of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Schultz unlawfully delivered Methadone to Andrew T. Jacobson in January.
Jacobson, 49, of Crystal Lake, ingested the substance and it caused his death on the morning of January 27, the complaint said.
Court documents said Schultz sold the methadone to Jacobson before he was later found dead.
The coroner’s office ruled his cause of death was from methadone toxicity.
An obituary for Jacobson said he was a dedicated truck driver for many years and had an “immense passion” for his work and vehicles.
“His love for vehicles was only matched by his affection for animals, particularly his beloved black lab, Jack, who was the love of his life,” the obituary said.
“A quiet and private person, Andy kept his personal life to himself, but those close to him knew him as someone who had a warm heart and a fierce loyalty to those he loved,” the obituary added.
Schultz was charged on Monday and she was already being held in the McHenry County Jail at the time.
Court records show Schultz was charged on January 27 — the same day of Jacobson’s death — with two counts of manufacturing or delivery of a controlled substance.
Prosecutors sought for her to be held pending trial at that time but McHenry County Judge Cynthia Lamb denied their petition.
She was released in the new case and failed to appear in court the next day on January 29.
Court records show she had been sentenced to 152 days in jail in October 2023 for a 2021 McHenry County drug case.
The 152 days in jail was a stayed sentence but the stay was lifted after she failed to appear in court. She was taken into custody on January 29 — the same day the failure to appear in court warrant was issued.
Lamb granted a new petition to detain filed by prosecutors on Monday following Schultz’s drug-induced homicide case being filed.
The judge said Schultz poses a threat to anyone who may purchase drugs from her and there were no conditions of release to mitigate the threat.
Schultz is scheduled to appear in court again on March 26.
