A private ambulance transporting a patient to the hospital was involved in a crash with another vehicle, leaving one of the ambulance crew members injured, in Gurnee.
The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Route 120 and Route 21 for a crash involving an ambulance.
Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said an investigation revealed a Honda Civic was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Route 120, also known as Belvidere Road, and Route 21.
The driver, a 20-year-old Grayslake woman, was preparing to turn right onto southbound Route 21.
Gaylor said the light changed to green and the Honda turned right onto Route 21.
A private ambulance, which was traveling southbound on Route 21 with its lights and sirens activated, collided with the Honda at the same time.
A patient was in the back of the ambulance at the time of the crash.
Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief James Gramer said the fire department took over care for the adult patient who was being transported in the private ambulance.
Gurnee paramedics completed the transport of the patient to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Gaylor said the patient’s status is unknown.
One of the two private ambulance crew members suffered minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital, Gramer said.
The driver of the Honda was the sole occupant of the car and they were uninjured.
The private ambulance belonged to IMG Ambulance, based in Crystal Lake, Gramer said, adding that the second crew member of the private ambulance was also uninjured.
Gaylor said the driver of the Honda was issued a citation for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle using audible and visual signals.
