One person was killed in a fatal crash at the intersection of Russell and Green Bay Roads late Saturday night in Zion, authorities said.

Lieutenant Derek Zaloudek of the Zion Police Department said one vehicle was stopped at a red traffic light in the northbound lanes of Green Bay Road and prepared to head into Wisconsin when a second vehicle crashed into it from behind at high speeds at 10:45 p.m. Saturday.

Zaloudek said a passenger in the striking vehicle suffered significant injuries and was pronounced dead at an area hospital later.

The driver of the striking vehicle was transported to the scene to an area hospital and released, Zaloudek said.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured in the crash.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team was contacted and is investigating the circumstances of the crash, Zaloudek said.
