An Oregon man was sentenced to 60 days in McHenry County Jail and three years of probation for repeatedly sexually abusing a Port Barrington child nearly a decade ago, court records show.
James Schlight, 69, received the 60-day jail term and probation during a sentencing hearing in front of Judge Mark Gerhardt Friday.
The sentencing took place after Schlight was found guilty on seven counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child younger than 13 during a January trial, McHenry County State’s Attorney officials said in a news release.
The charges were Class 2 felonies with sentencing ranges of probation to up to seven years in prison.
Prosecutors charged Schlight with multiple counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child under the age of 13 after the victim came forward with the allegations in 2021, the release reads.
The incidents took place between 2014 and 2018, the news release reads.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office said that Schlight is a long-time resident of Oregon but would visit friends in Port Barrington.
During these visits, Schlight inappropriately touched a young girl when she was between the ages of six and ten, the news release reads.
At trial, prosecutors presented testimony from the young victim, members of her family, and corroborating evidence, which resulted in a guilty verdict, the news release reads.
Based on the nature of the charges for which he was found guilty, Schlight will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
