Police are warning residents in the Round Lake Beach area after fake flyers, disguised to look official, were placed on doors seeking access to inspect people’s homes.
The Round Lake Beach Police Department said Thursday that they are investigating a suspicious incident.
Police said a solicitor-type door hanger was distributed. Despite the flyer looking official, it has no association with the Village of Round Lake Beach’s water department.
The door hanger lists “Water Testing Center” at the bottom which is not a real company or government agency.
The Village of Round Lake Beach has not received any solicitor permit registration for anything similar to it.
The door hanger says “Water control inspection. Sorry we missed you” and lists the family’s name and house address.
The door hanger asks that the resident call a number associated with an 855 area code within the next three days.
Police said they called the phone number but the call was ended once the police department identified themselves as officers.
It is unclear what the motive behind the door hangers are but police in Lake County routinely remind the public to be aware of ruse burglaries.
Ruse burglaries are crimes in which an offender or offenders use a ruse to distract the victim in order to gain access to a home and burglarize it.
Police say residents should not allow anyone in their home unless they know them personally or it is a scheduled appointment.
