Firefighters assisted a driver out of his car and police then arrested him after he performed an illegal U-turn and rolled his car over off of the roadway in Gurnee.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Grand Avenue and Kilbourne Road for a report of a vehicle crash.
Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said officers found a single-vehicle crash.
The Kia Sportage SUV was off the roadway and overturned onto its driver’s side.
The Gurnee Fire Department arrived on the scene and assisted in safely removing the driver from the vehicle, Gaylor said.
The driver was uninjured in the crash and did not require transport to the hospital.
Gaylor said the investigation revealed that the driver of the Kia was traveling westbound on Grand Avenue when he attempted a U-turn, lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle rolled off the roadway.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Eastbound Grand Avenue at Route 21 was shut down until 3:10 p.m.
Officers identified the driver as Margarito Palestina Mujica, a 19-year-old Round Lake Beach man, and determined that he had a revoked driver’s license.
Gaylor said further investigation revealed Palestina Mujica has previous convictions for driving with a revoked license. He was arrested at the scene.
The case was reviewed by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, which declined felony charges.
Palestina Mujica was issued citations for driving while license revoked, improper U-turn and driving without insurance.
He was released from custody with a future court date after being cited.
