The weather service is warning about a severe weather threat involving thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds and tornadoes to the northern Illinois area on Sunday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a hazardous weather outlook for northeast Illinois on Saturday morning.
The outlook includes Lake, McHenry, Boone, Will, Cook, Winnebago, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois and Ford counties.
The outlook said there is a chance of thunderstorms late Saturday night, mainly across northwest Illinois but no severe weather is expected.
Severe thunderstorms are possible across the entire area on Sunday.
Several rounds of storms may move across the area. The primary severe weather threat window will be between 2-6 p.m.
“All modes of severe weather are possible, including large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes,” the outlook said.
Lake and McHenry counties, as well as Chicago and the surrounding collar counties, are listed as a two out of five for severe weather threat.
The NWS said there remains uncertainty about whether morning storms will develop and how much that could impact the afternoon severe potential.
