A Lake County man in his 20s has died after police say he crashed a motorcycle into a median and struck a sign in a northern Cook County suburb Friday evening.

The Northfield Police Department and Northfield Fire-Rescue Department responded around 10:23 p.m. Friday to the 2200 block of Willow Road in Northfield for a report of a crash with injuries.

Northfield Police Department Commander Thomas Hanus said the crash involved a single-vehicle, a motorcycle, and occurred in the eastbound lanes.

A preliminary investigation showed that a three-wheeled motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Willow Road near Old Willow Road and Somerset Lane.

The motorcycle, operated by a 24-year-old Riverwoods man, crashed into the center median curb while negotiating a curve in the roadway, Hanus said.

The motorcycle then struck an Illinois Department of Transportation sign at the intersection.

Hanus said the man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Willow Road was shut down between Sunset Ridge Road and Wagner Road for approximately nine hours during the initial investigation before being reopened around 8 a.m. Saturday.

The North Regional Major Crash Assistance Team (NORTAF MCAT) is assisting the Northfield Police Department in the investigation.

Hanus said the cause of the crash remains under investigation and further information will be released as it becomes available.
