A Waukegan woman died after police say she turned in front of another vehicle, causing a crash that resulted in significant damage and left a second person injured, in Gurnee.

The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 2:20 p.m. Friday to the intersection of Grand Avenue and 1st Street in Gurnee for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said officers found two vehicles with significant damage.

The Subaru Forester and BMW 340i Series both had their airbags deployed.

The driver of the Subaru, a 74-year-old Waukegan woman, appeared to be trapped inside her vehicle but was responsive, Gaylor said.

The driver of the BMW, a 20-year-old Ingleside man, reported experiencing pain in his leg.

A preliminary investigation showed that the BMW was traveling westbound on Route 132 approaching 1st Street.

Gaylor said the Subaru, which was traveling eastbound on Grand Avenue, attempted to turn left onto 1st Street and turned directly in front of the BMW.

The driver of the Subaru was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center by the Gurnee Fire Department.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office said the woman was pronounced dead in the intensive care unit on Saturday evening.

The driver of the BMW was treated at the scene but was not seriously injured, Gaylor said.

The circumstances of the crash are being investigated by the Gurnee Police Department.

The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld pending notification to her next of kin.
