An 89-year-old woman is in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash that shut down a busy intersection in Barrington Sunday afternoon, police said.

The Barrington Police Department and Barrington Fire Department responded around 12:13 p.m. Sunday to South Barrington Road and Dundee Road for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Barrington Police Chief David Daigle said the crash involved two vehicles in the intersection.

A white Honda Civic, driven by an 89-year-old Palatine woman, was traveling southbound on Barrington Road.

The driver attempted to turn left onto eastbound Dundee Road from Barrington Road, Daigle said.

A Hyundai sedan, driven by a 37-year-old Deer Park man, was traveling northbound on Barrington Road.

Firefighters removed the 89-year-old woman from the Honda and transported her by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

She was listed in critical condition and was still alive as of Monday morning, Daigle and the coroner’s office said.

Two ambulances were called to the scene but it is unknown if the second driver was also hospitalized.

While police initially had tow trucks remove the vehicles from the scene, the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was later activated and responded.

Police shut down the intersection for at least an hour and a half during the investigation, Daigle said.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by MCAT and the Barrington Police Department.
