No injuries were reported after a driver mistakenly crashed into the front of a dental office in downtown Marengo Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The Marengo Police Department and Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts responded around 12:01 p.m. Tuesday to 110 East Washington Street in Marengo for a report of a vehicle crash.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and located a single-vehicle crash involving a building, according to Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.

The car had struck the front of Marengo Dental, causing moderate damage to the building.

Vucha said that although the call initially reported possible entrapment in the vehicle, crews determined there was no one trapped.

The adult driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was evaluated at the scene by paramedics but declined further medical treatment.

The business was open at the time of the crash and Vucha said it was fortunate that no injuries were reported inside.

The City of Marengo Building Department was requested to assess the damage to the building.

Fire crews confirmed there were no additional hazards present and cleared the scene by 12:45 p.m., Vucha said.

Marengo Police Department Sergeant Andrew Kjellgren said the driver is believed to have accidentally put their foot on the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing the car to strike the building.

The driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, Kjellgren said, adding that it is unknown whether the building remains habitable.
