Officers have arrested a suspect after officials say a man was shot twice by a gunman during an argument and fight at a gas station in Waukegan Wednesday morning.

The Waukegan Police Department responded on Wednesday to the BP gas station at Grand Avenue and Jackson Street for a report of shots fired.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said two subjects were arguing, which led to a physical fight.

The fight then escalated with one of the men shooting the other.

The victim walked into Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan for treatment after being shot in the stomach, Chastain said.

Chastain said the two knew each other and it was not random.

The victim, a male in his 30s, was stabilized after being treated in the hospital.

Officers arrested the suspect and charges are being filed against him.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Vukovich said the incident was captured on surveillance video.

The video showed a van occupied by three people, including the victim, pulling up to a pump at the gas station.

Vukovich said the victim and suspect were seen arguing before the suspect, a convicted felon, returned to the van and retrieved a gun.

The victim could be seen hunching over while clutching his abdomen after being shot twice, Vukovich said.

The suspect fled on foot before later being arrested by officers.
