A house under renovation sustained significant damage by a fire where firefighters were hampered by water and access issues in Round Lake Beach Saturday morning.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 6:30 a.m. Saturday to the 1200 block of North Sunset Drive in Round Lake Beach for a report of a structure fire.
Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Tony Carraro said firefighters arrived to find a two-story, single-family home under renovation with smoke showing from the roof.
Firefighters initially attempted to enter the home to extinguish the fire.
They found holes that burned through the first and second floors from the fire in the basement, Carraro said.
The front steps and rear deck had been removed for construction, further hampering the extinguishment.
Carraro said fire crews also faced a broken fire hydrant and two water main breaks.
The incident was upgraded to a working still alarm and then to a box alarm through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) for additional resources.
The fire was extinguished in approximately an hour but firefighters remained on the scene for several hours checking for hidden fires and performing salvage operations.
Firefighters also worked to remove smoke and limit water damage, Carraro said. The interior of the home sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage.
The home was unoccupied during the fire and there were no injuries to firefighters.
The Grayslake, Fox Lake, Lake Villa, Antioch, Gurnee, Wauconda, Countryside, McHenry, Libertyville, Lake Zurich and Lake Forest fire departments assisted at the scene and covering Round Lake fire stations.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District.
