A middle school student in Waukegan was caught with a toy gun as school officials remind the school community that all types of weapons, including look-alike weapons, are not allowed.
Jack Benny Middle School Assistant Principal Kevin Brown sent a letter to parents and staff about the incident.
Brown said the incident occurred on Thursday when a student was found in possession of a toy gun.
Staff immediately confiscated the item upon discovery without incident and an investigation was conducted, Brown said.
“There is no indication that anyone was threatened or that the student intended to harm anyone,” the assistant principal said.
Brown said the school understands that incidents like these can “understandably cause concern.”
“We are sharing this information to keep you informed and to help minimize any anxiety this situation may have caused,” the letter said.
The school said that weapons, look-alike weapons and toy weapons are strictly prohibited on school grounds, buses and bus stops.
“These items pose a serious threat to the safety of our entire school community and are a clear violation of our rules and policies,” Brown said.
The school said any student found in possession of the items will have them confiscated and face disciplinary action in accordance with district policy.
Brown said students are urged to immediately report any situations they may encounter at school or on their way from or to school that they consider suspicious or unsafe.
“Please know that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain a top priority at Benny,” Brown added.
