Police say they are investigating a case of “vanishing” manhole covers which keep disappearing in Gurnee as the community is warned to be on the lookout for uncovered manholes.

The Gurnee Police Department said manhole covers are disappearing “faster than your last slice of pizza at a family gathering.”

“We’re on the case, but we need your help to stop these thieves and keep our streets safe and well-covered,” the department said.

Residents who spot a missing manhole cover should call the police immediately at 847-599-7000, extension 0, and the public works department will secure the manhole.

Anyone who sees someone stealing a manhole cover is urged to call the police right away.

“Missing manhole covers can be a serious trip hazard, sending you into a deep hole. So, keep an eye out as you walk around town. We don’t want you to become part of the mystery yourself!” police officials said.

“If you spot a Village of Gurnee vehicle near a manhole, don’t worry—they’re definitely not the bad guys! They’re just doing their job, ensuring our roads stay safe for everyone,” officials added.

Officers are working with local metal recycling companies to make sure any suspicious activity gets flagged.

The department said they are hopeful to catch the “manhole bandits” and thanked the community for their help in trying to solve the case.
