Authorities say a man fired a gun inside a home in Lake Villa while other family members were present before a brief standoff that ended peacefully.

The Lake Villa Police Department responded last Thursday to the 400 block of Blazing Star Drive in Lake Villa for reports of a disturbance at a home involving a firearm.

Lake Villa Police Department Lt. James DeCaro said officers arrived and learned that Brian De Borba, 51, of Lake Villa, was experiencing a mental health crisis.

It was also learned that De Borba had discharged a gun at a wall on the first floor inside the residence, DeCaro said.

Officers determined there were family members still inside the home.

Officers, with the help of family members, engaged in a dialogue with De Borba and ultimately persuaded him to surrender peacefully, DeCaro said.

He exited the home without further incident and was taken into custody.

De Borba was transported to an area hospital for an evaluation.

“The safety of our community remains a top priority, and we commend the responding officers and the assistance of the family members for their efforts in resolving the situation without additional conflict,” Lake Villa Police Chief Rochelle Tisinai said.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved one count of reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony, against De Borba.

De Borba turned himself in to the Lake County Jail on the warrant on Thursday morning.

DeCaro said residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious or concerning behavior to law enforcement.

“Mental health resources are available for those in need, and we urge individuals facing crises to reach out for support,” DeCaro said.

Court records show De Borba was scheduled to appear for a First Appearance Court hearing on Thursday morning.
