A family was reunited with the Deerfield police officers who saved a woman after she collapsed in her home in Deerfield and had stopped breathing.

The Deerfield Police Department said they received a 911 call on February 17 for a woman who had collapsed on her kitchen floor and was not breathing.

Officer Barry Schwartz and Commander Andrew Kupsak responded to the call and arrived before the fire department.

The two acted quickly to begin lifesaving efforts, including performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver a shock.

The Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department arrived and took over CPR.

The woman regained consciousness and began breathing on her own a short time later, police said.

She was transported by ambulance to Endeavor Health Highland Park Hospital for further treatment.

Schwartz and Kupsak were reunited last week with the woman and her family, including her daughter, who called 911 that day.

“It’s moments like these that remind us of the positive and life-changing impact first-responders have on the community we proudly serve,” the police department said.

In November 2022, Officer Schwartz also helped save the life of an unresponsive person found in a vehicle in Riverwoods.

Schwartz used an AED to deliver a shock and took over CPR. The person began breathing again and was transported to the hospital.
