Plant employees were evacuated after a fire broke out and filled a large manufacturing plant with smoke near Woodstock Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded around 7:40 p.m. Tuesday to VORTEQ Coil Finishers, 15920 Nelson Road in unincorporated Woodstock, for a report of a commercial structure fire.

An initial 911 call placed by an employee inside the facility reported that the plant was filling with smoke and flames were seen, according to Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.

Firefighters arrived and did not find any visible smoke or flames from the outside of the large manufacturing plant.

Vucha said all plant employees had evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival and no injuries were reported.

Crews entered the building, which was filled with smoke, and worked to locate the origin of the fire.

Vucha said conditions inside the plant indicated the possibility of the fire extending into the roof.

The response was upgraded to a working fire, prompting the dispatch of additional water tenders, fire suppression apparatus, personnel and change-of-quarters units.

Vucha said an aggressive and coordinated interior operation led firefighters to locate and extinguish the fire in the ceiling area near an exhaust vent before it could spread further.

Firefighters left the scene by 9:15 p.m. after hazards were mitigated and conditions were confirmed safe.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.
