Officials say a driver was arrested after his car crashed at full speed into the rear of a school bus, leaving one person injured, before he fled the scene in Gurnee.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 2:45 p.m. Monday to Hunt Club Road and Cunningham Court for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Officers arrived to find a Honda Accord that rear-ended a school bus, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Lillian Lewis.
The bus was occupied by the driver and had students on board at the time.
Lewis said a passenger in the Honda was injured and told officers his friend, Edgar Carlin, 27, of Zion, had been driving.
The Honda went underneath the bus and was totaled. The children on the bus were not reported to be injured.
The driver of the bus told officers the bus was stopped in the left lane and another school bus was in the right lane actively unloading children when the crash occurred, Lewis said.
Video showed the Honda approaching the bus at a high rate of speed and did not slow down or attempt to turn before crashing into the rear.
Carlin was seen fleeing the scene in the video, Lewis said.
He was charged on Friday with leaving the scene of a crash involving injury or death, leaving the scene of a crash, driver failure to give notice of a crash and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
Carlin was arrested and appeared in First Appearance Court on Saturday where the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain him.
Lake County Judge Ruth Lofthouse released Carlin from custody and scheduled a detention hearing for Tuesday afternoon.
